Aogashima is the part of the Izu Archipelago and about 300km south from Tokyo. It is very good place for birding but there are a few informations in web so this time I will write about the birding in Aogashima. The most things I wanna emphasize are 1. Aogashima is the "Japanese wood dove's island" 2. geothermal heat makes our happy. I will write in following step ; ①birds in Aogashima ②Sea birds near Aogashima ③Conservation ④Migratory birds.
(Columba janthina) Japanese wood pigeon 160503 Aogasima
(Columba janthina) Japanese wood pigeon 160503 Aogasima
In south parts of the island, there are double volcano and between the mountains laurel forest occupying the spaces. It is not easy to write the view because it is so unique, so please searching the image on web. Maybe you can find the pictures if you searched with the ward "Aogashima". Iijima's reef warbler, Izu Islands thrush and Japanese robin are breeding in the island and the density is so high. Also Japanese wood pigeon breeds in, perhaps the density is Unbelievable high! Some times I watched the flock that contains over 30 individuals. Many time they flied over 400m high, also it is unique. Because in other island, this pigeons flies near the crown of the forest of more lower spaces. This time I could hear some kinds of calling. I thought that they like talking! Once upon the time, this dove distributed in mainland of Japan, but now we can see this bird only island. So this trip, I think I could observe the behaviors that when they were the dominant species in forest of mainland.
Brown-eared bulbul of this island is same subspecies to mainland's one. However they had a unique call like "chaginton(animations name but I don't know where country made) !"or "Dokinchan (it is the name of a character of popular Japanese kids animation)" . I thought that the cultures of bulbul in Aogashima are maintained.
(Zosterops japonicus) Japanese White-eye 160503 Aogashima
Subspecies of White-eye is different from the mainland ;Zosterops japonicus stejnegeri. Z.j. stejnegeri has longer bill than mainland's one. But this time I didn't feel the differences, on the other hands I felt the differences in Miyake that I visited 2 years ago. Anyway this time I thought that the whitish-area of the bill is a little larger than other island's that. The behavior of White-eyes of this island is a little unique and maybe you can feel the power of Ecology. So when you visit, you should watch this species.
(Calonectris leucomelas) Streaked Shearwater 160504 Near Aogashima
(Pterodroma hypoleuca) Bonin petrel 160504 Near Aogashima
Short-tailed albatross chased the boat that I took, it was so excited. But during taking the boat, I was enjoyed talking with woman so I didn't take any picture. Also I could see Bonin petrel, it was a little lucky. Maybe you can see a lot of Short-tailed Shearwaters and Streaked Shearwaters.
In Izu archipelago, it is the big problems that the introduced Weasels. They broke downed the ecosystem, they ate many many birds and reptiles. 1-15 million years mammal predators had not entered the island Miyake that 170km south from Tokyo. In the case of Aogashima this island is 300km south from Tokyo. I think it is unable to enter the mammals to this island, of just a little bit of possibility in little mammals like mice. Weasels are so cute and I know they are not scoundrel, however I hope the ecosystems of these islands will be protected from introduced animals.
I found Black-naped oriole in Hachijo, this species is rare in Japan. At that time I didn't have camera so I took photos with binoculars and ipod. In Aogashima also I could see a lot of migratory birds ; Japanese yellow bunting, Chestnut-cheeked Starling, Narcissus Flycatcher, White-throated needletail, Yellow-browed Bunting, Japanese Thrush and Red-capped Lark. You can see a lot of birds and You can also cook with geothermal heat, maybe you can spend good weekend in this island. I recommend you visit Aogashima!
