Now is the migrate season in Japan. I like birding in mountains, but there is no mountain within 50km from my house. So I feel little frustration. I observed Sooty flycatcher last month in Nagano pref center of Japan. Family flock of this species contained 2 adult and 2 juvenile. Both 2 adult maybe the parent of juveniles. Adult foraged with flycatching many time and feed to juveniles. I had very good time then.
Moult proceeded in parallel with growing their chicks. We can see old & new primaries in this pic. P5-9 new and P1-4 old. P4 is growing and maybe P3 is also growing. Also moult of greater cover proceeds, and upper-tail cover contains some new feathers.
I thinks juveniles of flycatcher are so cute, don't you think? One day before I observed, it was heavy rainfall. I heard that many chicks leave their nest after bad whether. Considering that, the day I observed was the day of fledging. I couldn't hear the begging call. Chicks only swing their wings to get feeds. I was not able to observe this family flock long time because of research. Next time I find Sooty's family flock, I hope I can observe a lot.
